About Studio 198

Studio 198 is an independent UK-based contemporary art studio founded and led by a single artist committed to producing original, one-of-one works. A graduate of the University of the Arts London, the founder of Studio 198 brings over two decades of expertise to the creation of fine art, with works held in private collections worldwide.

Each piece is created entirely by hand using a range of mixed media approaches, chosen intuitively according to the demands of the work. The studio does not produce prints or photographic reproductions — every artwork is a unique, singular object.

The practice explores psychological intensity, gesture, distortion, vulnerability, and visual tension. Studio 198 is concerned with the emotional register of mark-making — the space where instinct overrides refinement and raw expression meets considered composition.

While informed by the broader language of late 20th and early 21st century contemporary art, the work is not derivative of any individual artist or movement. Each piece is conceived and executed as an original visual statement, developed through an independent studio process.

Studio 198 operates with the ethos of a private atelier rather than a mass-production platform. Works are released selectively and are available only as original pieces.

On Practice & Reinterpretation

"My artistic practice is rooted in the careful study and reimagining of artists from the past and present. I deliberately mimic their techniques—not to copy them, but to understand them from the inside. By reconstructing their methods, surfaces, and compositional structures, I engage directly with the language of art history.

From the depth and control of Rembrandt to the bold colour of André Derain and the raw immediacy of Philip Guston, I treat technique as a tool rather than a destination.

This process allows me to use traditional visual languages to express contemporary, avant-garde ideas. My work sits between tradition and disruption—grounded in history, yet firmly positioned in the present."
