In Untitled (Cardboard Study), Studio 198 constructs a raw and immediate visual language, drawing conceptual energy from the expressive legacy of Jean-Michel Basquiat while maintaining a distinct material presence.
Executed in mixed media on cardboard, the work embraces imperfection as a central aesthetic. The surface carries an urban sensibility — layered, interrupted, and alive with gesture. Fragments of text, symbolic markings, and loosely rendered imagery collide across a vibrant field of turquoise, punctuated by moments of stark contrast and spontaneous intervention.
The use of cardboard as a support introduces a deliberate tension between fragility and assertion. It grounds the work in a tactile, almost provisional quality, reinforcing the sense of immediacy and process. Marks appear both instinctive and considered — written, erased, and rewritten in a continuous negotiation of meaning.
Iconographic elements — from hand-drawn figures to scattered words and graphic motifs — function as a fragmented language. They resist direct interpretation, instead inviting the viewer to navigate the surface intuitively, assembling their own reading from its visual cues.
At 24 x 36 inches (61 x 91 cm), the scale allows for both impact and intimacy. The composition feels expansive without losing the raw, hand-worked energy that defines the piece.
Presented framed, the work balances its unrefined materiality with a controlled, gallery-ready finish.
This is a one-off original.
